Concept cars are about dreams, emotion and inspiration. They are a unique chance for Toyota to say where the design is heading, and to show its customers what they plan in the future.
But the truth is there’s a lot more to automotive design than dreaming up what you want your car to look like on the outside. Designers have to work closely with engineers, production plants, and marketing specialists to create a car that is not only beautiful, but that will sell and is practical to own.
Toyota design centres in California, Japan and Southern France submit design proposals for new concept cars on a regular basis. They all send clay models to headquarters in Tokyo and the winner gets to develop the production vehicle. |

Toyota invests heavily in creating concept cars to try out new ideas before they go into production. This allows Toyota a chance to present ideas early in development internally and sometimes to the public. The reaction to these full-sized models often determines what aspects of the design will become part of a future vehicle. Design at Toyota is a fine balance between the pragmatically essential and the desires of the customer.
